Lip Filler in Montréal: Your Consultation Questions Answered
Should I choose 0.5 mL or 1 mL of lip filler? Can filler migrate? Will the injections hurt? What should I avoid afterward?
At Clinique Le RoseWood in Montréal, we welcome these conversations. Our approach to lip enhancement begins with a personalized consultation, an understanding of your health history, and a discussion about what you would like to achieve.
Here are our answers to four questions we frequently hear during consultations.
1. Should I get 0.5 mL or 1 mL of lip filler?
The right amount should be determined during your consultation. You are not expected to arrive knowing what you need—that is what we are here to help you understand.
When comparing 0.5 mL versus 1 mL of lip filler, remember that volume alone cannot predict your result. Your underlying tissue structure, the product selected, and the amount injected all influence the outcome.
A proper assessment considers your lip anatomy and facial proportions alongside your goals, medical conditions, allergies, medications, and previous aesthetic treatments. These details help your practitioner determine whether filler is appropriate and recommend a treatment plan.
At Le RoseWood, we want to understand what “natural” means to you. Are you looking for a little more fullness, a more defined lip border, or better balance? Bring your questions and describe the changes you have in mind. We will guide the conversation about product and quantity.
Our goal is to recommend the amount appropriate for your anatomy and desired outcome.
2. Will my lip filler migrate?
Filler migration is possible, but it is not inevitable. Migration means that filler moves away from the location where it was injected. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists it among the rare reported risks of dermal fillers.
Excessive volume, injection pressure, and muscle movement are among the proposed contributors discussed in published reports. Migration is not limited to people who have received repeated injections over many years, and its causes cannot be reduced to a single factor.
At Clinique Le RoseWood, our treatment philosophy is conservative: we aim to use the least amount of product appropriate to achieve the agreed result. We work with your natural anatomy, respect your proportions, and reassess before recommending more filler. This reflects our broader focus on balanced, subtle enhancement.
That approach is consistent with the American Academy of Dermatology’s recommendation to avoid overdoing fillers when seeking a natural appearance.
If you are concerned about the shape of your lips or the position of previous filler, contact us for an assessment before booking another treatment.
3. Do lip filler injections hurt?
Some discomfort is possible, and the experience varies from person to person. Injections may cause brief stinging or burning, even when comfort measures are used.
At Le RoseWood, we use numbing before lip enhancement, as appropriate to your medical history, and encourage you to tell us how you are feeling throughout the appointment.
Some hyaluronic acid lip fillers also contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic intended to reduce injection discomfort. Additional topical or injected anaesthetic may be used when appropriate. These measures help make treatment more comfortable, although they do not guarantee a completely painless experience.
You do not need to hide your nerves or “push through” discomfort. Tell us if you are anxious, have had an uncomfortable experience before, or need a pause. Your comfort belongs in the treatment conversation.
4. What can I do—and what should I avoid—after lip injections?
Follow the instructions provided for your specific treatment. Aftercare can vary with the filler used and your individual circumstances. The following guidance applies to hyaluronic acid lip fillers.
Keep your day gentle. Most patients can resume ordinary daily activities after filler treatment. A cold compress, applied gently as instructed, may help with swelling and discomfort.
Pause intense exercise and alcohol. Le RoseWood’s aftercare guidance recommends avoiding both for 24–48 hours. Your practitioner will confirm the timing for your treatment.
Avoid excessive heat and strong sun exposure initially. JUVÉDERM’s Canadian guidance recommends minimizing these exposures during the first 24 hours, as they may increase temporary redness, swelling, or itching. Follow the instructions for the product you receive.
Leave your lips alone while they recover. Avoid unnecessary touching, pressing, or massaging unless your practitioner specifically instructs you to do so. Contact the clinic about a concerning bump instead of trying to reshape it yourself.
Ask when to restart lipstick, gloss, and makeup. Recommendations depend on the product and treatment instructions. For example, JUVÉDERM’s Canadian guidance advises avoiding makeup for 12 hours after treatment.
Give your lips time to recover
Temporary swelling, tenderness, redness, and bruising can occur after filler injections. These reactions often improve within 7–14 days, although recovery varies. Avoid judging your final appearance while the area is still swollen, and contact your practitioner about symptoms that persist or concern you.
Know when to seek urgent help
Unusual or worsening pain, skin turning white, grey, or blue, or any change in vision requires immediate medical attention. These can indicate a serious complication affecting blood supply. Call 911 for vision changes or stroke symptoms, such as sudden difficulty speaking or weakness, and notify your injector. Do not wait for a routine follow-up appointment.
